ReplyDeleteDespite the convenience, fast food must be avoided. The fast food industry, from source to consumer, is unethical, cruel and exacerbates an already unhealthy society. When the same foods served to hundreds of people every day are ready in less than five minutes, one should raise some concerns about quality and the health risks that follow its consumption. Every item on a fast food menu has been altered in some way. Ethics are set aside to increase production and decrease expenses. Cows and chickens in overcrowded farms are fed cocktails of growth-promoting steroids to produce unnaturally large quantities of meat. These animals grow to large sizes so rapidly their heart cannot support their weight resulting in congestive heart failure and death. The conditions on these large, environmentally-unfriendly farms are so crowded and unsanitary, the animals do not have room to sit or relieve themselves in a sanitary fashion. This leads to bacterias, such as E. Coli, in the meat. The animals that do make it to the slaughtering line alive, are only knocked unconscious before being dismembered. There is no law stating that the animal must be pronounced dead at the time of slaughtering. Ethics are not a concern to the fast food industry when there is money to be made. In fact, only 19% of what you pay for a fast food meal actually accounts for the food itself. The rest goes toward operations, packaging, marketing, and customer service. So, all items on the dollar menu only cost about twenty cents to produce. Mutilation does not stop at the farm, however. Products travel from farms to factories where they are processed and 'modified' again. Food items that should only require a few ingredients to produce are recreated with tons of additives. Most of these additives are not items we usually consume. In fact, there is an ingredient used in McDonald's salads that is not even allowed for use in cat food because it has not been deemed safe yet. So when ordering a salad at a fast food restaurant as a 'healthy alternative', think twice. Even more disturbing, it is legal to have traces of maggots, rat feces, rodents and insects (dead or alive), grime and debris in fast food because it is not harmful to the body in small amounts. The fact that the fast food industry uses these inedible ingredients in their food only raises concerns about health effects associated with its consumption. The health effects associated with the consumption of fast food are both immediate and long-term. The Canadian Journal of Cardiology found that after a single fast food meal blood arteries only open to a quarter of the size they would when in a healthy state. Insufficient artery dilation can lead to a condition in which the arteries harden and blood flow can be blocked. If that is the consequence of only one fast food meal, imagine the damage after consuming fast food every day. Especially with fast food using child-focused marketing, we need to be careful of what examples we set for our future generations. The Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine discovered that when children consume a meal from a fast food or full-service restaurant, they eat more calories, sugar, fats and sodium than necessary for the entire day. Diet related diseases are increasingly affecting children today with one in three children described as overweight or obese. Obesity is the largest influence on the increase in childhood type 2 diabetes- which used to be extremely rare in children- asthma, and liver disease. Many adult-onset conditions, including stroke, cardiovascular disease and cancer, have been found to be linked to poor diet, as well. It is evident how easy and convenient fast food is but that is what makes it so cheap and unhealthy. Handing over just a couple dollars for a full meal may seem attractive to ones wallet but not to his or her health. The means of production behind fast food are so unethical, cruel and unhealthy that the only thing the industry does not hurt is ones wallet.
